"John the Robot" by Matthew H. Phillips {Book Review}

Blurb:

Ithan Higgins is a down on his luck freighter pilot just trying to eke out living. John the Robot is his trusted co-pilot/engineer and probably his best friend. Together, they are on a mission to deliver some mysterious goods to a wealthy benefactor who wants no questions asked and a timely execution of the transport of the unique freight. To protect the innocent, mainly Ithan; he always keeps his nose out of the storage bay and hopes that nothing will crawl out into the ship proper. For now Ithan and John the Robot carefully watch over their ship called Bessy as they travel the bleakness of interstellar space.

Everything seems to be going smoothly, a rarity for this duo to be sure; however, just when Ithan is about to put his feet up and take a much needed break, the space police are on his ship’s fumes and desperate to take him in for whatever laws Ithan has broken on this voyage. It will take much patience and extreme piloting skills to avoid his arch nemesis, the captain of the space police ship following Bessy. Yet, Ithan will have to endure one creature and his constant and not very charming complaints to a level not reached---since their last trip. If the space police don’t capture Ithan, his trusty and loyal robot may just send him over the brink of sanity. Can one space going vessel be big enough for Ithan Higgins and John the Robot?

But she’s about to find that even though she’s uniquely unwelcome wherever she goes, her abilities also make her the best chance the Shadow World has to stop a threat to all the Shadow races.

Coy, a human captive that Racquel saves from the Vampires, starts showing kindness toward her. Racquel tries putting distance between her and the human boy but as they spend more time together it becomes harder and harder for Racquel to fight the affection she wants and needs.

Review:

Brandy pens "Uniquely Unwelcome" in an original plot that started out a bit slow for me but eventually picked up and kept my interest. Her characters were good and engaging but need a bit more developing. Overall it was a nice read that I did enjoy and would say a must read for all paranormal mystery fans.

I give "Uniquely Unwelcome" a 4 star rating.

A Scholar's Journey The Divine Tempest

A Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest

A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest is a no-holds-barred fantasy brawl. It begins when the God of Justice and Retribution opens The Abyss and unleashes a vengeful demon upon the mortal realm of Therra. Now it is up to scholar Penndarius Greyson and his tormented protector, martial artist Soren Luna Mortalitas, to stop a crisis that would send shockwaves through the very fabric of creation. In addition, Penndarius is waging an internal battle with a disembodied presence attempting to possess his mind. The two heroes must avoid death or capture, but there is a catch: They have only one day to solve a riddle older than history before a dark host of unstoppable demons is released into the world. The Divine Tempest includes warring factions, betrayal and redemption, and of course, Herrick Erickson-Brigl's trademark: epic fight scenes. This is the lean, hard-hitting first installment in a series that follows Penndarius’s growth as the avatar of the God of Creation and Soren’s reclamation of his lethal family’s humanity.

"Gifted Trust" by John Paul Allen {Review & Giveaway - Ends 4/2}

Blurb:

In 1930 Max Belote, a Dallas literary agent, heard the voice of Virago. “Tell her, just be good,” it whispered and he’d repeat before mutilating or killing his victim. Wanting to stop the evil entity inside him, Max ended his life. In 1970 convicted serial murderer Jeffrey Michael Roberts also heard the words, and until his execution he fulfilled its desires. In 2003 Virago spoke to Edward Paine, a high school teacher, who sought help to destroy the creature within. One soul, three lives, and the evil entity that commands them.

Death is not the end... It’s a brief interruption.

"Chief Complaint Brain Tumor" by John Kerastas {Book Review}

Book Description:

At 57 years old, I thought I was the poster child for fifty-year old healthiness: I competed in triathlons, rode in 100 mile biking events and ate a healthy diet chock full of organic vegetables. Then I discovered that I had a brain tumor the size of my wife’s fist.

My memoir chronicles the first year I spent addressing tumor-related health issues: preparing for my first operation, discovering a dangerous skull infection, having the infected portion of my skull surgically removed, learning about my substantial vision and cognitive losses, undergoing rehab and radiation treatments, and learning to live with my “new normal.” And, as best I can tell, the phrase “new normal” is the medical community’s code words for “You’re alive, so quit bitchin’.”

As my health changed, so did my sense of humor.  My humor started out superficially light-hearted prior to the first operation; transmogrified into gallows humor after several subsequent operations; and leveled out as somewhat wry-ish after radiation and rehab.

"Dog-ma the Zen of Slobber" by Barbara Boswell Brunner {Author Interview}

Author Interview
with author of Dog-Ma, the zen of slobber, Barbara Boswell Brunner

What inspires you when you write?
Humor and my dogs are my writing inspiration. They can do the funniest things that I MUST share! I first started keeping notes of their crazy antics many years ago. You just can’t make up some of the stuff they do. I write a blog for Izzy, our blind terrier, Zen And A Blind dog where I try to document some of the more entertaining challenges she has being blind. She is such a trooper.

Do you have a favorite spot to write?
Yes, absolutely. My husband likes to fish. When we take our boat out into the Gulf of Mexico, I can sit in the cabin with total silence except for the lapping of water on the hull. For me, this is ideal writing time.

Who is your favorite author(s)?
That is like asking which is my favorite dog or favorite child. There is no right answer and there are way too many people who would be left in a turbulent wake.  I like all genres and enjoy some very diverse authors. My preference is for a writing style that is not too wordy or overly descriptive. I love writers who give just enough of a description so that you understand the character or situation and let your imagination fill in the blanks.

What are you reading now?
I have two books going at the same time right now. Mary Metcalfe’s ROAD TO TOMORROW, which is the third in her Look To The Future series. I love Mary’s writing style. I also just started Chandler McGrew’s ‘TRUDERS which has me glued to the edge of my seat. His books scare the bejesus out of me.

Any tips to new writers out there?
Keep at it, write as often as you can and don’t be discouraged by rejection letters. I have enough to start a good size bonfire!

About Barbara Boswell Brunner
barbaraboswellbrunnerBarbara grew up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with her parents, sister and always a dog, or two or three. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from a small women's college in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Meeting her husband in Washington, DC, they continued together on a journey as self-proclaimed dog addicts. In the ensuing years, she founded three successful businesses in the Pacific Northwest and is a prolific fundraiser for breast cancer research. She and her husband are retired and now reside in Southwest Florida with two dogs and copious amounts of dog fur. She is currently working on indulging her well known flip flop addiction.

About the Book
dogma
For dog lovers everywhere.......Barbara's vivid and dramatic stories, told with a wicked sense of humor, will make you laugh out loud. She definitely gets what living with rescued dogs (nine of them!) is all about. This book will inspire you with the couple's unstinting love, devotion, and respect for dogs as family members. You'll be glad to include it in your treasured collection of great dog books.

When Barbara meets her future husband, Ray, it is love-and dog-at first sight. Over the course of thirty-two years, seventeen relocations and nine dogs, their mutual love of dogs guides them on their unconventional path. The love that Barbara and Ray get in return is literally lifesaving, with one dog attacking a lethal intruder and another discovering Barbara’s cancer. Her own survival story underscores the story of how her dogs become survivors themselves.

Each new dog adds its own dynamic to the family, sometimes upending it. From Turbo (whose Spock-like ears may have provided super powers), Barbara learns about the will to live; Lexington demonstrates incredible patience and an inexplicable love of golf; Madison teaches that laughter is truly the best medicine and that the whole “nine lives thing” is not reserved just for cats; Morgan should be sainted for tolerating Izzy, who is as cute as she is bad. Barbara is certain that somewhere in doggie heaven there is a poster that says “If you are sick, injured or in need of really expensive medical care, FIND THESE HUMANS!”

Chief Complaint Brain Tumor

Chief Complaint: Brain Tumor

At 57 years old, I thought I was the poster child for fifty-year old healthiness: I competed in triathlons, rode in 100 mile biking events and ate a healthy diet chock full of organic vegetables. Then I discovered that I had a brain tumor the size of my wife’s fist. My memoir chronicles the first year I spent addressing tumor-related health issues: preparing for my first operation, discovering a dangerous skull infection, having the infected portion of my skull surgically removed, learning about my substantial vision and cognitive losses, undergoing rehab and radiation treatments, and learning to live with my “new normal.” And, as best I can tell, the phrase “new normal” is the medical community’s code words for “You’re alive, so quit bitchin’.” As my health changed, so did my sense of humor. My humor started out superficially light-hearted prior to the first operation; transmogrified into gallows humor after several subsequent operations; and leveled out as somewhat wry-ish after radiation and rehab. Topics I write about in the book include:

The Virus spread. Billions died. The Ending began. We may have survived the apocalypse, but the Virus changed us.
When people started getting sick, “they” thought it was just the flu. My roommate, my boyfriend, my family…they’re all gone now. I got sick too. I should have died with them—with the rest of the world—but I didn’t. I thought witnessing the human population almost disappear off the face of the earth was the craziest thing I’d ever experience. I was so wrong. My name is Dani O’Connor, I’m twenty-six-years-old, and I survived The Ending.
The Virus changed everything. The world I knew is gone, and life is backwards. We’ve all had to start over. I’ve been stripped of my home, my dreams…all that is me. I’m someone else now— broken and changed. Other survivors’ memories and emotions haunt me. They invade my mind until I can no longer separate them from my own. I won’t let them consume me. I can’t. My name is Zoe Cartwright, I’m twenty-six-years-old, and I survived The Ending.
We’ve been inseparable for most of our lives, and now our friendship is all we have left. The aftermath of the Virus has stranded us on opposite sides of the United States. Trusting strangers, making sacrifices, killing—we’ll do anything to reach one another. Fear and pain may be unavoidable, but we’re strong…we’re survivors. But to continue surviving in this unfamiliar world plagued by Crazies and strange new abilities, we have to adapt. We have to evolve.

"Wondertown" by Mac Fallows {Musical Book Review}

Book Description:

Wondertown is a full-length fantasy novel from Mac Fallows that includes twelve original songs—each one an extension of the story sung by the characters themselves- and seventeen illustrations from acclaimed illustrator, Emrah Elmasli.

The story centres around Neil Abbott, an undersized, introverted eleven-year old boy with the ability to tell about people by touching their possessions. He doesn't fit in either at home or at school and rarely speaks to anyone, with the exception of his grandmother, who has a secret talent of her own.

One day, after a particularly difficult week, Neil asks his grandmother if she thinks he’s normal, and she responds by telling him the remarkable story of an unlikely hero, who long ago crossed the five parts of the world to free his only friend from a demon lord. Filled with hidden meaning, vivid images, and songs that bring the characters to life, Wondertown is an unforgettable journey to a place inside each of us few of us dare to go

"The Old Spook" Charles Ameringer {Book Review}

Book Description:

The Old Spook is a spy/detective novel about a burned out CIA operative Tom Miller that morphs Richard Burton (Alec Leamus) into Humprey Bogart (Sam Spade)—and back again! A tale of espionage and sleuthing that engages the reader in the culture and tradecraft of the CIA and the dilemma of government secrecy in a democratic society. The novel begins with a flashback of the old spook’s career that reveals the stress of shady dealings with sinister characters and transports the reader to such places as Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Bolivia and Chile. Miller has hair-raising encounters with the Russian agent who recruited Lee Harvey Oswald and meetings with Miami Mafia figures. He’s involved in several plots to assassinate Fidel Castro. In the wake of the Watergate scandals and Jimmy Carter’s purging of the clandestine services, Miller takes forced retirement. Not ready to call it quits, however, he goes home to Milwaukee where he opens a detective agency and takes on a missing-person case that unwittingly puts him on the trail of a Mafia hit-man. This case gains the attention of Detroit crime bosses and the CIA itself and then there’s an attempt on his life… The novel covers the 1950s to the 1970s and plenty of names are dropped – Dulles and Helms of the CIA, the Kennedys, Guevara, the missing union boss Jimmy Hoffa, the Mafia chieftains Sam Giancana and Johnny Roselli, Oliver North et al. In the style of Upton Sinclair and Herman Wouk, the fictional Tom Miller interacts with actual events and personalities to provide an entertaining and intriguing read.
