Saucy Sunday

3 to 3 1/2-pound boneless pork top loin roast (double loin, tied)
1 to 3 cloves garlic, cut into thin slices
1 teaspoon coarse salt or regular salt
1 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
3 medium apples, cored and cut into wedges (about 3 cups)
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup apple juice
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons dry mustard

Prep: 25 minutes Roast: 2 hours Stand: 10 minutes Oven: 325°F

Preheat oven to 325°F. Cut small slits (about 1/2 inch long and 1 inch deep) in pork roast; insert a piece of garlic into each slit. Combine salt, rosemary and pepper; rub onto meat surface. Spoon off any fat from roasting pan.

Combine the apples, brown sugar, apple juice, lemon juice and dry mustard. Spoon apple mixture around roast. Roast, uncovered, for 30 to 45 minutes longer, or until meat thermometer reaches 155°F and meat juices are clear.

Transfer meat to a platter. Cover and let meat stand for 10 minutes before slicing. (The meat temperature will rise 5°F during standing.) Remove the rack from the pan. Stir apple wedges into pan juices. If desired, use a slotted spoon to remove apple wedges and pass juices. Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Congratulations to all my friends who were born in the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank sherry while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, bread and butter, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, and didn’t get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then, after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, seatbelts or air bags.

We drank water from the garden hose, not from a bottle.

Take out food was limited to hamburgers and fish and chips, there were no pizza shops, McDonald’s, KFC, Subway or Taco Bell.

Even though all the shops closed at 6pm and didn’t open on a Sunday, somehow we didn’t starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends from one bottle and no one died from this. We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store to buy licorice, gobstoppers and bubble gum.

We ate white bread and real butter, drank cow’s milk and soft drinks with sugar, but we weren’t overweight because... we were always outside playing!

Nature Jams – Toe Tapping Fun For the Whole Family!

Nature Jams – Toe Tapping Fun For the Whole Family!

I was very excited when I was selected to do the review for Farmer Jason, Nature Jams. I love music and like most people I have my favorite bands and genres. However when you grow up with a musician for a father you have no choice but to listen to all types of music, thank goodness. My father played and loved classical, blues and Jazz of which I complained about as a child but it must have sunk in somewhere because as an adult I love it all.

The best way to instill a love of music in children is to capture their attention first and keep it there. What better way than with songs and music you find yourself humming and tapping your toes too!

"Eleven Hints for Life"

1. It hurts to love someone and not be loved in return. But what is more painful is to love someone and never find the courage to let that person know how you feel.

2. A sad thing in life is when you meet someone who means a lot to you, only to find out in the end that it was never meant to be and you just have to let go.

3. The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've ever had.

4. It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.

5. It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone-but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.

6. Don't go for looks, they can deceive. Don't go for wealth, even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.

7. Dream what you want to dream, go where you want to go, be what you want to be. Because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

8. Always put yourself in the other's shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the person too.

9. A careless word may kindle strife. A cruel word may wreck a life. A timely word may level stress. But a loving word may heal and bless.

10. The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

11. Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, ends with a tear. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one smiling and everyone around you is crying.

For Smokers Attempting to Kick the Habit

This is a great article written by the administration at Nondiet.com.  Here is just a taste of what she has written...

For smokers attempting to kick the habit, an electronic smoking device can seem like the answer to a prayer. Manufacturers of these battery-powered gadgets claim that the vapor supplies nicotine without the harmful side effects of smoking traditional cigarettes, leading many to make the switch. Whether you’re using an eCigarette as a temporary cessation device or planning to permanently replace a smoking habit with nicotine vapor, here are ten reasons you should consider carefully before making that eCig kit purchase......

Happy Valentine's Day!

Herbs for Smoking Cessation

There are several herbs with a traditional reputation for helping people quit smoking. These herbs exert varying effects that will ease the process of smoking cessation. Most of them can be found in either dried bulk, capsule, or liquid extract form. Follow the directions on the label for use. If using dried herbs, use them only to prepare tea, and never smoke them as a replacement for tobacco.

Lobelia (pictured above): Is a very powerful herb that helps to calm the mind and relax the body. It has helped many people to control their cravings for nicotine. Lobelia is also reputed to have the effect of making cigarettes taste very bad.

St. John’s wort: One of the best known herbs for promoting a positive mental attitude–something people often need help with during the early phases of becoming a non-smoker.

Black cohosh: Is commonly used by women to help them stay balanced during their monthly cycle. However, it is also known to be a safe sedative that relieves nervousness and anxiety, which makes it useful for the irritability, restlessness, and nervousness associated with quitting smoking.

Blue vervain: Has been referred to as a natural tranquilizer and as such it can be used to calm the nerves. It can also be used for insomnia.

Catnip: Has a soothing and relaxing effect on the digestive system, and helps to relieve diarrhea, flatulence, indigestion, upset stomach, and headache. Catnip also has antispasmodic properties that make it useful for abdominal cramps as well as chronic coughing. Catnip is also good for alleviating sleeplessness. Catnip’s antibiotic and astringent properties are also beneficial for treating colds and bronchial infections.

Hyssop: Has the ability to help with clearing mucus congestion in the lungs associated with COPD. It also has been known to alleviate the anxiety and even hysteria that is sometimes associated with smoking withdrawal.

Korean ginseng: Is one of the most popular herbs in the world for stimulating energy and helping the body to deal with stress. This property enables ginseng to help alleviate the fatigue and anxiety related to quitting smoking. Ginseng is known to help reestablish balance in the body’s systems, which can be helpful to smokers as their bodies adjust to the absence of nicotine.

Motherwort: Has properties that enable it to act as a sedative, inducing tranquility in times of anxiety associated with quitting smoking.

Oat straw or oat seed: One of the best remedies for stress, nervous debility, and exhaustion, especially when associated with depression (a common affliction in people who have recently quit smoking).

Peppermint: Has a relaxing effect on the muscles of the digestive system, combats flatulence, and stimulates the flow of bile and other digestive juices. The volatile oil in peppermint acts as a mild anesthetic to the stomach wall, which helps alleviate feelings of nausea. Where headaches are associated with digestion, peppermint may help. Peppermint also eases anxiety and tension.

Skullcap: Contains plant compounds that help the brain produce more endorphins (naturally occurring chemicals that promote feelings of well-being). This is believed to enhance both awareness and calmness. Skullcap relaxes states of nervous tension while renewing and reviving the central nervous system.

Slippery elm: Is rich in nutrients and easy to digest, making it an excellent food during times of digestive discomfort, which can sometimes accompany smoking cessation. It works with the body to draw out impurities and toxins, assisting with the healing of the entire body.

Valerian: One of the premier sedative herbs used to aid people with anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Valerian also acts as a muscle relaxant. Valerian is clearly one of the herbs of choice in smoking cessation to deal with the issues of insomnia, restlessness, and anxiety.

The Benefits of Bitter Herbs

Bitter herbs are one of herbal medicine’s great contributions to human health. Quite simply, this category contains herbs that have a bitter taste, ranging from mildly bitter yarrow to fiercely bitter rue. Absinthin, a constituent found in wormwood, is so bitter it can be tasted even at dilutions of 1 part in 30,000 parts of water. The strong flavor is often attributed to a “bitter principle,” which can be a volatile oil, an alkaloid, an iridoid, or a sesquiterpene.

Following stimulation of the bitter receptors, located at the back of the tongue, a range of physiological responses occurs. Specific taste buds transmit the taste of bitterness to the central nervous system, triggering a number of reflexes. These reflexes have important ramifications, all of value to the digestive process and general health:

• The stimulation of the flow of digestive juices from the exocrine glands of the mouth, stomach, pancreas, duodenum, and liver aid in good digestion as well as helping a range of conditions caused by inefficient or allergy-distorted digestion.

• The flow of digestive juices triggers a stimulation of appetite. This is helpful in convalescence as well as in cases of appetite reduction.

• A range of liver activities is stimulated, including increased bile production and the release of bile from the gallbladder.

• A very mild stimulation of the endocrine glands occurs, producing insulin and glucagon secretions from the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Diabetics need to use bitters cautiously, as these herbs can change the blood sugar balance. In the hands of a skilled practitioner, however, bitter remedies can play a role in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes.

• Bitter remedies can trigger subtle psychological effects, even acting as mild antidepressants. For example, bitters can help lift the spirits in cases of post-viral-infection depression.

• The central reflex stimulates peristalsis, an action that moves wastes through the intestines through a series of muscular contractions.

• Bitter remedies also stimulate the gut wall’s self-repair mechanisms.

Some common herbal bitters are:

RIP Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston, 48, found dead in Beverly Hills

Singer Whitney Houston, who reigned as one of the world's top pop stars in the 1980s and '90s but suffered from recurring bouts with drugs and alcohol, was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel room Saturday.
Law enforcement sources told The Times that paramedics arrived at the Beverly Hilton hotel, where Houston was staying, and found her dead. Her cause of death was unknown, said the sources, who asked to remain anonymous because the investigation is ongoing.
Houston, 48, was in the Los Angeles area for a musical tribute for music executive Clive Davis and had performed earlier this week.

On a Personal Note....
It's an epic tragedy and ending to an unmistakably wonderful voice and iconic star. Thank you Whitney for all the energy you gave to us. Rest in peace now, the pain is over.

Book Review... Shark and the Wolf: Predators and Prey By Daniel Shields

Shark and the Wolf: Predators and Prey is a well written novel with intriguing characters which include a pool playing shark in love with a Vixin, his best friend Dog Z Boy, the Wolf and so much more.  The characters and locations are nicely done, to where you feel like you are actually there while you are reading.  While humor is well intergraded into the horror of what is done to animals and humans alike in this cleveraly written novel, one must not miss the lesson within.

Daniel Shields intertwines the characteristics of animals and humans, and reminds us that we all have animalistic tendencies which include capture, torture, and slavery in well written and understandable tones.  This is a great story for teens and adults to enjoy, and one that is highly recommended.
