"Seasons of the Vineyard" by Catherine MacDonald {Book Review}

Synopsis:

Francesca Bernard receives a call from Enrico, the foreman on the family vineyard telling her that her father has driven the truck through the barn and doesn’t remember. Reluctantly, Francesca returns with her son and notices the changes in her father and the vineyard. The vineyard is struggling and her father is slipping toward dementia. She must make the decision to stay and resurrect the Zinfandel wine, which once put the vineyard on the map, but the secret to the wine is buried with her mother. The vineyard is in financial distress and brokers are attempting to purchase the property, but her father refuses to sell. Tension arises between Francesca and Enrico and she can’t ignore the sexual energy. Francesca and Enrico have a turbulent past, which is the reason she left the vineyard.

Her mother’s spirit visits at night, startles Francesca, and urges her to help her father because he is too stubborn and arrogant to admit he’s scared and confused. Her mother’s spirit is stuck between worlds and cannot leave until her husband is taken care of. Francesca must make the decision to work the vineyard and bring it back to its once glory. The tension between Francesca and her father is thick and she prods his mind about the Zinfandel: Bella Serrano. She agrees to represent the vineyard at an event, where she meets the dashing Giancarlo, who is also after the vineyard.

Francesca and Giancarlo begin dating, which distresses Enrico so he quits, and she is left with an ailing vineyard, sick father, and rebellious teenaged son. Her father is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and falls and hits his head, ending up in the hospital.

Giancarlo steps up his pursuit of Francesca and the vineyard. Francesca finally understands that Giancarlo wants only one thing—the vineyard—and she isn’t selling. Nope. Her father slips further and further away. Her mother’s spirit repeatedly visits and Francesca tries to talk to her about the Zinfandel, but the spirit says the wine can wait but her father can’t. Her life is in turmoil. Her father dies. Her new vineyard manager is picked up for drunk driving, and her ex-husband shows up at the funeral. She and Giancarlo have an argument and he hits her, causing her to flee in her car. She hits a deer and ends up in the ditch. She wakes up in the hospital, where she is visited by the spirit who tells her goodbye because it’s her time to cross the great divide into the next world. Her father has safely made it. Then she tells Francesca the secret ingredient. Love. Enrico will love and support her so she grows into a world class vintner, but first she needs to make it right with him and tell him he’s her son’s father, not her ex-husband. Then love will flow through the vineyard and she will create the Zinfandel wine because the grapes will flourish when there is love.

Enrico returns when he learns of her accident. The intoxicating scent of the harvest awakens her true feelings for him. Passion resumes between them and she tells him he doesn’t’ have to wait for her any longer. The vineyard connects her with the cycles of the season. Wine is the holy substance that unites her to the vineyard. Enrico tells her they are going to love each other and because of their love the Zinfandel wine will flourish once more.

"Friendfluence" by Carlin Flora {Book Review}

Synopsis:

Discover the unexpected ways friends influence our personalities, choices, emotions, and even physical health in this fun and compelling examination of friendship, based on the latest scientific research and ever-relatable anecdotes.

Why is dinner with friends often more laughter filled and less fraught than a meal with family? Although some say it’s because we choose our friends, it’s also because we expect less of them than we do of relatives. While we’re busy scrutinizing our romantic relationships and family dramas, our friends are quietly but strongly influencing everything from the articles we read to our weight fluctuations, from our sex lives to our overall happiness levels.

Evolutionary psychologists have long theorized that friendship has roots in our early dependence on others for survival. These days, we still cherish friends but tend to undervalue their role in our lives. However, the skills one needs to make good friends are among the very skills that lead to success in life, and scientific research has recently exploded with insights about the meaningful and enduring ways friendships influence us. With people marrying later—and often not at all—and more families having just one child, these relationships may be gaining in importance. The evidence even suggests that at times friends have a greater hand in our development and well-being than do our romantic partners and relatives.

Every day I stared hell in the face, and each day I wanted to die. I don’t want to share too much too quickly. To understand fully, you must join hands with me, fasten your heart to mine, and course through my book. Stumble over the incomprehensible human rights journey with me. I’ve pondered it to the brink of questionable sanity, and it is the only way. It’s the only way to explain. I suppose I should consider myself lucky I survived at all—for many did not—yet, perplexingly so, that’s not the premise of this narrative. He altered my life, marked me forever. But it’s not how you might imagine. This is a story involving Horacio Botello, my torturer known as Puma.”

BLURB:

A magical curse has been unleashed and Connecticut teen Sorcerer Rob Seablue’s best friend has been seduced by evil magic. And he will wage a war against the evil magic all while seeing heavy metal rock shows, going on dates with his girlfriend, doing his homework, and avoiding getting grounded by his father for staying out late! A unique novel at the cutting edge intersection of teen urban fantasy and libertarian/objectivist fiction, this novel can be described as “Atlas Shrugged” meets “Harry Potter.”

"What more could a libertarian novel reader want? . . . The book is ingenious throughout and most ingenious at its end -- ingenious, I might add, without losing plausibility. Actually, the story continually becomes more plausible, as well as more exciting." - Stephen Cox, Editor, Liberty Magazine.

"The Darkening Dream" book tour.
This tour is brought to you by Innovative Book Tours.

BLURB:

The Darkening Dream is the chilling new dark fantasy novel by Andy Gavin, creator of Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter.

Even as the modern world pushes the supernatural aside in favor of science and steel, the old ways remain. God, demon, monster, and sorcerer alike plot to regain what was theirs.

1913, Salem, Massachusetts - Sarah Engelmann's life is full of friends, books, and avoiding the pressure to choose a husband, until an ominous vision and the haunting call of an otherworldly trumpet shake her. When she stumbles across a gruesome corpse, she fears that her vision was more of a premonition. And when she sees the murdered boy moving through the crowd at an amusement park, Sarah is thrust into a dark battle she does not understand.

With the help of Alex, a Greek immigrant who knows a startling amount about the undead, Sarah sets out to uncover the truth. Their quest takes them to the factory mills of Salem, on a midnight boat ride to spy on an eerie coastal lair, and back, unexpectedly, to their own homes. What can Alex's elderly, vampire-hunting grandfather and Sarah's own rabbi father tell them? And what do Sarah's continuing visions reveal?

No less than Gabriel's Trumpet, the tool that will announce the End of Days, is at stake, and the forces that have banded to recover it include a 900 year-old vampire, a trio of disgruntled Egyptian gods, and a demon-loving Puritan minister. At the center of this swirling cast is Sarah, who must fight a millennia-old battle against unspeakable forces, knowing the ultimate prize might be herself.

"Grade A Stupid" by A.J. Lape {Book Review}

Synopsis:

Fifteen years ago, Darcy Walker’s parents thought it was a good idea to give her a unique name: Darcy, meaning “dark walker.” Whether that was a stroke of genius or stroke of stupid, they definitely nailed the irony. She lacks direction, her grades stink despite a high IQ, she’s boringly average--although flirting admirers claim otherwise--and God help her, she’s infatuated with a bad-boy. A bad-boy that her hottie best friend, Dylan, wishes would get acquainted with his fist. And, oh yeah, there’s that tattoo that was a royally stupid idea. With her life spiraling out of control, everything changes when she skips class and finds a dead body…in fact, it gets worse. It jump-starts Darcy’s inner-verb, and her AD/HD mind gets caught up in a situation she can’t let go. Set in the fictional Cincinnati town of Valley, Ohio, Darcy falls into a world of threats, violence, and gangland exploits, chasing down every clue to finger the murderer. When a fellow misfit is arrested for the crime, Darcy goes from zero-to-sixty trying to clear his name—constructing aliases, breaking the law, everything that makes perfect sense to her, but reeks of Grade A Stupid to everyone else. Trouble is…will she live to see 16?
