Grade A Stupid

Grade A Stupid

Fifteen years ago, Darcy Walker’s parents thought it was a good idea to give her a unique name: Darcy, meaning “dark walker.” Whether that was a stroke of genius or stroke of stupid, they definitely nailed the irony. She lacks direction, her grades stink despite a high IQ, she’s boringly average--although flirting admirers claim otherwise--and God help her, she’s infatuated with a bad-boy. A bad-boy that her hottie best friend, Dylan, wishes would get acquainted with his fist. And, oh yeah, there’s that tattoo that was a royally stupid idea. With her life spiraling out of control, everything changes when she skips class and finds a dead body…in fact, it gets worse. It jump-starts Darcy’s inner-verb, and her AD/HD mind gets caught up in a situation she can’t let go. Set in the fictional Cincinnati town of Valley, Ohio, Darcy falls into a world of threats, violence, and gangland exploits, chasing down every clue to finger the murderer. When a fellow misfit is arrested for the crime, Darcy goes from zero-to-sixty trying to clear his name—constructing aliases, breaking the law, everything that makes perfect sense to her, but reeks of Grade A Stupid to everyone else. Trouble is…will she live to see 16?

"Magnolia" by Carolina Garcia-Aguilera {Review & Giveaway - Ends 11/27}

Book Description:

MAGNOLIA (B&B Press; November 2012), Garcia-Aguilera’s new novel, is a clever, witty and engaging story where two great American pastimes — sex and sports — come together. The reader will follow the story of Magnolia Larson, a beautiful, twenty-two year old woman from a conservative, Catholic Minneapolis family, as she transforms herself into a kind of “sports geisha,” a high priced hooker for elite athletes. An irresistible page-turner, MAGNOLIA is a sensual smorgasbord of racy encounters, playful fantasy and everything in between.

The novel begins in Miami with Magnolia sitting on a barstool, alone, nursing a broken heart, broke, and with no immediate prospects. Unless her situation quickly improves, she will have to admit defeat and head home to Minneapolis, an option she can barely contemplate. Everything changes when an attractive, impeccably groomed woman sits next to her and introduces herself as a sports agent.  The agent makes a unique business proposition, one that will allow Magnolia to remain in Miami and earn a great deal of money: become a “sports geisha” to a select group of elite athletes, but, she warns Magnolia that she will have to “train” very hard to be successful.  Magnolia has to learn Spanish as quite a few of the clients are Latino, study with a sports psychologist so she can relate to the pressures unique to elite athletes, transform her body into the kind of condition required to carry out the physical demands that will be made of it, spend time with a stylist who will teach her how to dress for the encounters, and meticulously care for her appearance.

Once Magnolia finishes training, the story evolves into her encounters with clients, steamy trysts in which she satisfies the athletes’ physical needs and desires. Among these are a world-class sailor whose wife literally jumped ship for another woman, knocking the wind out of his sails; a heavyweight boxer who must be cured of his addiction to ring girls, a distraction that threatens to derail his career; a superstar tennis player who seems only to be able to relax on the court; a celebrated quarterback who cannot perform sexually; and an accident prone, risk taking snowboarder. Magnolia, after studying her clients’ psyches, tailors her approach to each one, and uses whatever is necessary to satisfy their physical and emotional needs, including using props from each sport and having encounters in the venues where the athletes compete (Marlins Stadium, Sun Life Stadium; Jai-alai Fronton).

For the close to two years that she has been working as a sports geisha, Magnolia leads a luxurious existence and makes more money than she ever could imagine. Despite this and the seductive excitement of meeting such unique people, Magnolia is conflicted.  Her guilt at hiding the truth about her life in Miami from her family is consuming her.  She has a real need to connect once again with normal people, have a boyfriend who does not pay her for her company, hang out with girlfriends, and have a dog. Mostly, though, she is tired of living a lie.

Readers will delight in witnessing Magnolia’s experiences, meeting the book’s colorful cast of characters, and ultimately learning whether Magnolia will choose to continue her life as a sport geisha or sacrifice it all for a more normal existence.

"Phantom" by Laura DeLuca {Book Review}

Book Description:

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card. Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist. Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.

"A Practical Arrangement" by Nadja Notariani {Excerpt & Giveaway - Ends 12/12}

Excerpt:

Evangeline felt sorry for Melody in a small way, her mother as well. They had no defense, no antidote to counter the forceful emotions stirred in them. She counted herself lucky to have been spared their burden.
In good time Melody and their mother returned, tea arriving directly afterward, and while glad to see them she couldn't deny sorrow over her lost solitude.
“Oh, they both are such handsome men, Melody. And wealthy enough, too.”
“Mr. Lane is, by far, more handsome with his light hair and eyes,” Melody admired openly.
They really are too silly! Infatuated girls, you'd think!
“What say you, Evangeline?” Melody challenged brightly. “Which gentleman do you prefer?”
Pursing her lips, Evangeline took a deep breath.
Of all the fiddle-faddle! Preferring gentlemen!
“I don't prefer either of them, nor any other for that matter.”
But as usual, Providence gave her no quarter, choosing the moment of her sister's question to spring said gentlemen into the sitting room. All eyes landed upon her, her father grinning in a most amused way. Evangeline flushed, a deep burn rising under her skin. Thomas Masterson made his greetings, and as the others conversed around the tea cart he neared, taking her hand and bringing it to his lips.
“I'd take you at your word, Miss Grey, but your pretty blush suggests perhaps you do harbor a preference.” His eyes simmered, locked intently on hers.
Oh! What did he mean by saying that?
She found herself squirming under that gaze of his – and appalled – stilled immediately. Gathering herself, she answered. “Never confuse indifference with deceit, Mr. Masterson.”
Still, he did not look away, surprising her.
